Hate Hurts Wales

In a bid to raise awareness and reporting of hate crime in Wales the Welsh Government have launched the ‘Hate Hurts Wales’ campaign this month, a major anti-hate crime campaign developed and launched in Wales

What is a hate crime?

A hate crime is any criminal behaviour which appears to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice, or includes words or behaviour that show hostility, based on a person’s perceived:

  • race
  • religion
  • sexual orientation
  • transgender identity
  • disability

A hate crime can include verbal abuse, intimidation, threats, harassment, assault and bullying, as well as damage to property. The perpetrator could be someone unknown to you, or they could be a friend.

Hate crime can take place both in person and online.

How to report a hate crime

If you have been a victim of hate crime you can report it to the police or to the National Hate Crime Report and Support Centre (run by Victim Support). You can also report these crimes if you see them happen to someone else.

Both the Police and Victim Support can offer you support to deal with what happened to you and find a way forward.

What happens when I report a hate crime?

The police, Victim Support and criminal justice agencies consider all hate crime to be very serious. If you decide to report a hate crime, the police will contact you and investigate what has happened. You will be offered support via Victim Support to help you cope with the impact of hate crime.

If your case goes to court, there may be stronger sentences which can be handed out to reflect the seriousness of these types of crimes.

Not all cases will be able to proceed to court but you will be offered support to help you deal with what has happened to you regardless.Beth yw trosedd casineb?

Trosedd casineb yw unrhyw ymddygiad troseddol yr ymddengys ei fod yn cael ei ysgogi gan elyniaeth neu ragfarn, neu’n cynnwys geiriau neu ymddygiad sy’n dangos gelyniaeth, yn seiliedig ar ganfyddiad unigolyn:

  • ras
  • crefydd
  • cyfeiriadedd rhywiol
  • hunaniaeth drawsryweddol
  • anabledd

Gall trosedd casineb gynnwys cam-drin geiriol, bygwth, bygythiadau, aflonyddu, ymosod a bwlio, ynghyd â difrod i eiddo. Gallai’r tramgwyddwr fod yn rhywun anhysbys i chi, neu gallent fod yn ffrind.

Gall troseddau casineb ddigwydd yn bersonol ac ar-lein.

Sut i riportio trosedd casineb

Os ydych wedi dioddef trosedd casineb gallwch ei riportio i’r heddlu neu i’r Adroddiad a’r Ganolfan Gymorth Troseddau Casineb Cenedlaethol (sy’n cael ei redeg gan Gymorth i Ddioddefwyr). Gallwch hefyd riportio’r troseddau hyn os ydych chi’n eu gweld yn digwydd i rywun arall.

Gall yr Heddlu a Chefnogaeth Dioddefwyr gynnig cefnogaeth i chi ddelio â’r hyn a ddigwyddodd i chi a dod o hyd i ffordd ymlaen.

Beth sy’n digwydd pan fyddaf yn riportio trosedd casineb?

Mae’r heddlu, Cymorth i Ddioddefwyr ac asiantaethau cyfiawnder troseddol yn ystyried bod pob trosedd casineb yn ddifrifol iawn. Os penderfynwch riportio trosedd casineb, bydd yr heddlu’n cysylltu â chi ac yn ymchwilio i’r hyn sydd wedi digwydd. Byddwch yn cael cynnig cefnogaeth trwy Gymorth i Ddioddefwyr i’ch helpu i ymdopi ag effaith troseddau casineb.

Os aiff eich achos i’r llys, efallai y bydd dedfrydau cryfach y gellir eu dosbarthu i adlewyrchu difrifoldeb y mathau hyn o droseddau.

Ni fydd pob achos yn gallu symud ymlaen i’r llys ond cynigir cefnogaeth i chi i’ch helpu i ddelio â’r hyn sydd wedi digwydd i chi beth bynnag.
