Young Wrexham Lives
Young Wrexham has teamed up with students from Coleg Cambria in Wrexham to give an insight into the lives of young people in Wrexham. Over the next few weeks we will be showcasing their articles that include ‘The life of a football reviewer, ‘Thoughts on Brexit’ for young people, ‘A trip to the moon’, ‘How to build a computer, ‘My favourite album’, ‘My favourite gig’, ‘Things I would change in Wrexham’, ‘Things I love about Wrexham.
In the project you can talk about most things (nothing rude, lude or crude) and it can be carried out by writing/video or animation. If you would like to take part in the ‘Young Wrexham Lives’ project then please contact us.
This is the debate that has been going on for a while. Many people say that young people’s voice should be and needs to be heard, and voting is a great way to do this. But the real question is; Would lowering the age to 16 be the right way to go? This is what I am going to be talking about. I am going to be talking about both sides of the argument and then stating my own opinion, I am going to be discussing two points on each side. I am also going to be stating whether I agree with the current argument that is being said.
The voting age should be 16!
The first argument I am going to be talking about and saying why the age should be lowered is that 16 years old’s deserve to have a say. The reason for this is that they have reached a responsible stage of their life, they now deserve a say on who could be elected for so and so. 16 Year olds are also allowed to join the Armed Forces, if this is allowed, surely you should have the right to vote? Personally, the way I see this is that if you decide to join the Army at just 16 making a decision. That is a huge decision and could impact your life immensely, and potentially put your life at risk. If this is the case, why are 16 years old’s not allowed to vote? Making a decision to join the army is theoretically a much bigger decision than voting who should next be elected.
The second point that I am going to be discussing is it would get younger people interested in politics and give them more knowledge on the subject later on in life, from the skills they have learned earlier on. Right now, in politics, the number of young people’s interest is ridiculously low. In my own opinion, the only way we could potentially address this is allowing younger people to vote, as it would encourage them to discover further into how it all works. However, some people might not be interested at all, that is perfectly fine. But it would prevent others to learn and discover more into the subject.
The voting age should NOT be 16!
Younger people could make immature choices to make themselves look ‘cool’. An example of this is that if you wanted to vote for the ‘fun’ of it, then you could just go and vote, and vote for a party that you know NOTHING about.
Younger people will also not care about politics. This could go either way, good or bad. It could go well because if the people that do not care vote, then the people that actually vote could have an impact and vote. It could go badly by stupid people voting about nothing that they know about and have a bad outcome on the country.
