Celebrating Pride Month in Wrexham: A Call for Solidarity and Safety

Posted on:   Posted by:

June is well underway, and with it comes Pride Month, a time to celebrate the vibrant diversity of the LGBTQ+ community.  It’s a month dedicated to honouring the history, struggles, and triumphs of queer individuals across the globe.  Here in Wrexham, we join in these celebrations with a deep commitment to inclusivity, support, and safety for all members of our community.

However, it’s also a time to acknowledge the stark realities that many trans and queer individuals continue to face.  In recent years, we have seen a rise in discriminatory rhetoric and violence against LGBTQ+ people, with trans individuals often bearing the brunt of these attacks.  It’s more important than ever to stand up and create spaces where everyone can feel safe and accepted.

The Reality of Trans and Queer Lives

Despite the progress made in LGBTQ+ rights, trans and queer individuals still encounter significant challenges.  From physical violence and harassment to discrimination in healthcare, employment, and housing, the threats to their safety and well-being are very real.  For many, simply living openly and authentically can be a dangerous act.

Statistics highlight the alarming rates of violence against trans people, particularly trans women of colour.  The Human Rights Campaign reports that 2023 saw record numbers of fatal violence against trans individuals in many parts of the world.  This violence is compounded by systemic issues such as inadequate legal protections and lack of access to essential services.

A Safe Space: The Info Shop

In response to these challenges, it’s crucial to create and promote safe spaces where LGBTQ+ individuals can find support and community.  The Info Shop in Wrexham is proud to be one such space.  Here, everyone is welcome, respected, and celebrated for who they are.

The Info Shop is more than just a physical location; it’s somewhere that queer lives are affirmed and valued.  Whether you’re looking for a place to access resources, or just a listening ear, the Info Shop is here for you.  Our mission is to provide a safe, inclusive environment where everyone can feel secure and supported.

What We Offer

Support Groups: We have close links with VIVA who run private groups for LGBTQ+ individuals to share experiences, offer mutual support, and build community.

Resources: Access information on a wide range of topics.

Youth Homlessness Prevention Service (YHPS): LGBTQ+ youth homelessness is still a pressing issue in the UK as LGBTQ+ young people remain disproportionately represented in the young homeless population.  As many as 24% of young homeless people are LGBTQ+ yet this crisis doesn’t get the attention it deserves.  If you, or someone you know is at risk of homelessness or needs support you can contact our YHPS Team on

“Time to Talk”: 68% of LGBT+ young people say their mental health has ‘got worse’ since the pandemic, compared to 49% of their non-LGBT+ peers.  We have a “Time to Talk” drop in every Thursday at the Info Shop from 3:00pm until 5:00pm and you can drop in to speak to someone about anything that might be worrying you.

Calling Out Homophobia and Transphobia

Creating a safe and inclusive community means actively standing against all forms of discrimination.  This includes calling out homophobic or transphobic behaviour when we see it, even among our friends.  It can be difficult to challenge someone we care about, but silence can be harmful. Here are some ways to address such behaviour:

Educate: Sometimes, people may not realise their words or actions are hurtful.  Share information and resources to help them understand the impact of their behaviour.

Speak Up: Politely but firmly express that homophobic or transphobic comments are unacceptable.  Your voice can make a difference.

Support: Encourage and support friends who stand up against discrimination.  Strength in numbers can change attitudes and behaviours.

Lead by Example: Show through your actions what it means to be an ally.  Treat everyone with respect and kindness, and others will follow your lead.

Stand with Us

Pride Month is not just a celebration; it’s a call to action.  It’s a reminder that we must continue to fight for the rights and safety of the LGBTQ+ community.

At the Info Shop, we’re committed to being a beacon of hope and a fortress of safety for all who walk through our doors.  We invite you to join us in this mission.  Whether you’re a member of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally, your support is invaluable.  Together, we can create a world where everyone is free to live authentically and without fear.

This Pride Month, let’s celebrate with joy, but also with resolve.  Let’s honour the resilience of the LGBTQ+ community and renew our commitment to ensuring that Wrexham remains a place where every individual, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation, can thrive in safety and love.

Happy Pride Month, Wrexham!
