March 8th marks International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate the incredible achievements of women around the world and to renew our commitment to creating a more equal, inclusive, and empowered future.
This year, the theme is “Accelerate Action” and it’s a call to all of us, especially young people to step up and make sure progress doesn’t slow down.
So, what does “accelerating action” mean, and why should it matter to YOU, the young people of Wrexham?
What Does “Accelerate Action” Mean?
International Women’s Day 2025 isn’t just about pausing to reflect on how far we’ve come (though that’s important too). It’s about what comes next. It’s a call to action for all of us to actively fight for gender equality, to dismantle barriers, and to create opportunities for all women and girls, everywhere.
It’s about speeding up the process. Historically, the fight for women’s rights has taken time, but the urgency to make change has never been more critical. We need faster progress to close gender gaps in areas like education, technology, business, politics, and beyond. And YOU can help make that happen!
Why “Accelerate Action” Matters for Wrexham’s Youth
As young people in Wrexham, you’re the future of this city, and the future of gender equality. Your generation has the power to move things forward faster than ever before, but to do that, we all need to step up, get involved, and create change where it’s needed most.
Here’s why accelerating action is so important for you:
- The Power of Digital & Social Media: You’re all living in a time where information spreads fast, and your voices have massive influence. Social media platforms are more than just places to connect with friends and watch reels; they’re powerful tools for advocacy and raising awareness. You have the ability to spread messages of change, highlight the work of incredible women, and challenge the status quo in just a few clicks.
- Driving Change Locally: Wrexham may be a smaller city, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have the potential to lead. Whether it’s calling out gender inequality in your school or local businesses or supporting women-owned businesses in the area, every action you take can spark a wider movement. Change starts locally, and the more you demand equality and fairness, the more it’ll spread.
- Creating Opportunities in Tech and Innovation: The world of technology is booming, and there’s a huge gap between the number of women and men working in tech. By accelerating action now, you can help close that gap and ensure that young women from Wrexham are as empowered in the digital world as anyone else. If you’re into coding, gaming, or any kind of digital creativity, there’s a space for you to make waves!
- Equality in Education & Careers: We know that women and girls still face barriers when it comes to education, career opportunities, and pay. In Wrexham and beyond, the future is in your hands. If you’re still in school, consider pushing for more opportunities for girls to explore STEM subjects, sports, or entrepreneurship. If you’re a young adult ready to start your career, challenge employers to provide equal pay, equal opportunities, and equal respect for all genders.
How Can YOU Accelerate Action?
Great, you’re inspired, but how can you turn that inspiration into real action? Here are some ways you can start making a difference, today:
- Speak Up and Raise Awareness: Use your voice. Whether on social media or in conversations with friends and family, talk about the importance of gender equality. Share stories of inspirational women, highlight gender issues in the news, and don’t be afraid to challenge any sexist ideas you come across.
- Get Involved in Local Movements: Wrexham has a growing community of passionate people who care about social change. Look for local women’s rights groups, events, or workshops happening around locally. Attend them, or if they’re not happening, start one! Host a discussion at your school or organise a community event that supports gender equality.
- Support Women Entrepreneurs: In Wrexham and all over the world, women are starting businesses and leading the way. Support local women entrepreneurs by buying from their businesses, sharing their work, and celebrating their achievements. This can have a ripple effect, inspiring other young women to take the leap and pursue their own dreams.
- Push for Equal Representation: Whether it’s politics, sports, media, or business, women need to be seen and heard. Push for equal representation wherever you are. If you’re in a leadership position at school or in a club, make sure to encourage diversity and provide equal opportunities for everyone, no matter their gender.
- Start a Project or Campaign: You’ve got the energy, and you’ve got the ideas. Why not channel that into a campaign or project that accelerates change? Whether it’s a social media campaign, a petition, or a local charity event, you can make an impact. Find like-minded people in your community who share your passion, and get started!
Wrexham Women Who Are Already Leading the Way
Wrexham is full of inspiring women who are already accelerating action in our community. From entrepreneurs to community leaders, artists to activists, they’re proving that change is possible. Whether it’s local women who have overcome challenges, created businesses, or led social movements, their stories show us that we don’t have to wait for change to happen!
Take a moment this International Women’s Day to look around Wrexham and find the women who are pushing boundaries. Their stories can inspire you to act, and perhaps even encourage you to become a leader yourself.
The Future is in Your Hands
The truth is, the future of gender equality is up to YOU. By accelerating action now, you can help create a world where everyone, regardless of gender, has equal opportunities, rights, and representation. You can challenge stereotypes, break down barriers, and build a future where equality is the norm.
Happy International Women’s Day, Wrexham! 💪
