March 8th marks International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate the incredible achievements of women around the world and to renew our commitment to creating a more equal, inclusive, and empowered future.

This year, the theme is “Accelerate Action” and it’s a call to all of us, especially young people to step up and make sure progress doesn’t slow down.

So, what does “accelerating action” mean, and why should it matter to YOU, the young people of Wrexham?

What Does “Accelerate Action” Mean?

International Women’s Day 2025 isn’t just about pausing to reflect on how far we’ve come (though that’s important too). It’s about what comes next. It’s a call to action for all of us to actively fight for gender equality, to dismantle barriers, and to create opportunities for all women and girls, everywhere.

It’s about speeding up the process.  Historically, the fight for women’s rights has taken time, but the urgency to make change has never been more critical.  We need faster progress to close gender gaps in areas like education, technology, business, politics, and beyond.  And YOU can help make that happen!

As young people in Wrexham, you’re the future of this city, and the future of gender equality.  Your generation has the power to move things forward faster than ever before, but to do that, we all need to step up, get involved, and create change where it’s needed most.

Here’s why accelerating action is so important for you:

1. The Power of Digital & Social Media: You’re all living in a time where information spreads fast, and your voices have massive influence.  Social media platforms are more than just places to connect with friends and watch reels; they’re powerful tools for advocacy and raising awareness.  You have the ability to spread messages of change, highlight the work of incredible women, and challenge the status quo in just a few clicks.
2. Driving Change Locally: Wrexham may be a smaller city, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have the potential to lead.  Whether it’s calling out gender inequality in your school or local businesses or supporting women-owned businesses in the area, every action you take can spark a wider movement. Change starts locally, and the more you demand equality and fairness, the more it’ll spread.
3. Creating Opportunities in Tech and Innovation: The world of technology is booming, and there’s a huge gap between the number of women and men working in tech.  By accelerating action now, you can help close that gap and ensure that young women from Wrexham are as empowered in the digital world as anyone else. 1. Speak Up and Raise Awareness: Use your voice. Whether on social media or in conversations with friends and family, talk about the importance of gender equality.  Share stories of inspirational women, highlight gender issues in the news, and don’t be afraid to challenge any sexist ideas you come across.
2. Get Involved in Local Movements: Wrexham has a growing community of passionate people who care about social change.  Look for local women’s rights groups, events, or workshops happening around locally.  Attend them, or if they’re not happening, start one! 3.
